Equine Assisted Therapy

Equine Assisted therapy horse with a person in connection with each other. The girl is playing with his nostril and looking at his nostrils, and the horse is standing watching her. Green leaf wall in background

Equine assisted therapy is a trauma-informed, experiential therapy that involves a combination of doing activities with a horse/s and processing your experience with the therapist.  Experiences are specifically tailored in consultation with you to meet your individual goals or your desired wishes for the session.  If you don’t have any specific goals, not a problem, we can work with that too!  We like to be flexible.  We find that things just unfold naturally!!

Horse activities are all ground based.  Which means there is no riding involved. Rather, you might be doing activities such as meeting the horses, spending time being in relationship with a horse, observing the horses, grooming, leading, building things, walking the horse through obstacle courses, and the like.

Do you have a fear of horses?  Not a problem, we can work with you in a way that: can help you to feel safe, is on your terms, and is at your speed.  If you’re still not sure, check out our Nature Based Therapy.

Equine assisted therapy is a great option for people with trauma conditions, anxiety conditions, fears, emotional dysregulation, grief & bereavement, and the like. It’s also fantastic for personal growth and wellbeing such as learning embodiment skills, learning emotional regulation skills, developing relationship skills, boundary setting skills, learning about your patterns, developing social-emotional skills, and so much more.

We also offer horsemanship skills. Our practices help you to build a mutual relationship with the horse. A relationship that is built on respect, communcation, listening to each other, boundary setting, and offering choices. As the horses trust in you builds, they become more willing partners in your journey together.

  • We recommend you wear casual weather-smart clothing (i.e. hat, sunscreen, raincoat etc).

If doing equine therapy jeans or shorts is recommended and closed in shoes is a requirement. Keep in mind that your clothing might get dirty from contact with the horses.

  • We value the privacy and confidentiality of client’s sessions, so sadly no.

Exceptions to this rule is if you are in a group, couples, or family session and you are all part of the session.

Parent’s are more than welcome to stay on the premises, but are required to remain in the car.

  • As much as we would love to meet your beautiful dog, sadly the answer is no.

The presence of a strange dog could unsettle the horses and make an equine therapy session unsafe.

The wildlife might also become disturbed by the dog’s scent.

  • Your first session will involve completing the intake process.

If you are receiving mental health treatment this intake session will take longer than those seeking personal growth and wellbing. Processes for all services will involve answering some background questions so that we get a better understanding of you and we can better tailor your time with us. You may also be asked to complete some surveys that help us to monitor changes over time. It is likely you will be asked to do these surveys again further down the track.

Your following sessions will involve a check-in and together we will determine the focus of the session to meet your desired goals.

For equine and nature based sessions, you will be offered to participate in an acitivity. If you are not comfortable with this activity you can decline, and we will give you an alternative option/s.

After you partcipate in an equine session, your experience will be explored further with the therapist to help you process your experirence at a deeper and more meaningful level.

  • Medicare rebates are only available to those with a diagnosable mental health conditon.

To be able to claim Medicare rebates you will need a valid MHTP (Mental Health Treatment Plan) from your GP.

GP’s will only issue these to people who have a diagnosable mental health condition, such as anxiety, ptsd, and the like. They will not provide a MHTP for relationship problems, personal growth or general wellbeing services.

The first MHTP is valid for 6 sessions. If you are still in need of more sessions, you will need to return to your GP to get a referral for another 4 sessions. During the pandemic, if you meet certain conditions, you may be entitled up to 20 sessions. These sessions are valid for a 12 month period from the date of referral .

To be rebated after a session, Nature’s Therapy Room® will provide you with a tax receipt showing the full amount paid. Using this tax receipt, you can claim the Medicare rebate online through Medicare’s portal, or at a Medicare office.

  • If you are booked in for an equine therapy session or an outdoor room based psychology session, your session will likely be rescheduled. This is for your safety and comfort. If a reschedule is necessary, we will contact you at least one hour prior to your session.

If you are booked in for a nature based session, we may be able to proceed if the weather is not torrential. We will call you and discuss our options. You will get the option to reschedule.

  • Yes, absolutely!

  • Don’t we all love a treat - horses too!

But we want the horses to connect with you at a true and deeper level. A connection where they want to be with you because of your mutual connection and relationship, not because of a treat.

So even though they would love a treat, for the sake of your relationship with them, the answer is no.
